1. Before you fly
- Be a current AMA member and carry your club ID card. Show it if a Board member asks.
- Pass the FAA's free Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), and carry proof when flying.
- Register any model weighing 250 g (0.55 lb) or more with the FAA, and mark it with your FAA registration number.
- Remote ID: our field is an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA). Models without Remote ID may fly here, as long as the pilot and the model stay within the field. Models that have Remote ID must broadcast it.
- All transmitters must be 2.4 GHz. No 72 MHz transmitters are allowed.
- New members must demonstrate safe flying practices to a Board member before flying “solo”.
- New or repaired models should have a pre-flight check before the first flight, including a radio range check.
- Set your model's failsafe properly, including remote engine shutoff. Be ready to show it working on the bench if asked.
2. Arriving and parking
- The speed limit entering and leaving the site is 12 MPH, strictly enforced.
- Yield right-of-way to ALL other vehicles.
- Main field (fixed wing): park in the designated area only. Move your vehicle to general parking after unloading.
- Heli side: park in front of the flight tables, behind the pit area.
3. Field hours
- Weekdays and Saturday: 8am to dusk.
- Sundays and holidays: 10am to dusk.
- No activity or club personnel at the field after dusk. This applies to all days, weekends and holidays.
4. In the pits
- All model airplanes must face away from the pit area at all times.
- No taxiing in the pit area.
- Engine testing only in the designated area.
- Helicopters: no main rotors spun up under power behind the flight line or in the pits (no exceptions). To test the head mechanics or electronics, remove both the main and tail blades.
- Never charge LiPo batteries inside a car or under the hood. Charge them on the charging table, or in the open back of a car or pickup.
- Visitors must stay behind the pit area.
5. Flying
- One pilot per flight station.
- Announce takeoffs, landings and emergencies.
- Heli side: call “next up” before the current pilot lands, and be ready to fly once that pilot clears the flying area.
- If an aircraft is in the air, wait for it to land before taking off. To fly at the same time, ask that pilot first.
- All aircraft take off and land from the center of the runway (heli side: the center of the heli field).
- Never fly over the pit area. Stay at least 25 feet from the flight stations.
- Heli high-speed passes must be at least 50 feet from the flight stations.
- Fly only in the designated area, and yield right-of-way to full-size aircraft.
- Keep your model in sight at all times, and at or below 400 feet (FAA rule and AMA Safety Code).
- All models must meet AMA and club noise levels. All engines must have a muffler and not exceed 100 dB at 3 meters.
6. Guests
- Flying guests must be with a club member, who stays with them while they fly.
- Guests sign the club release before flying. They can also sign it on their phone at rcrcc.com/guest.
- Guests may fly up to 2 sessions a year. After that, please ask about joining.
7. Flying alone
- Fly alone pilots must demonstrate safe flying ability to a Board member before flying alone.
- When flying alone, you are solely responsible for the condition of the field.
- All existing flight and field rules still apply.
- Keep the model within the established flight boundaries of the field.
- Consider your piloting ability and the model's weight, size and speed.
- Keep the model under control, within your line of sight at all times, and flown safely.
8. FPV (first-person view)
- FPV novice pilots must use a buddy-box system with an FPV spotter while learning to fly FPV.
- All FPV novice pilots must have a spotter next to them, keeping the FPV aircraft within visual line of sight (VLOS) throughout the flight.
- The FPV pilot must brief the spotter on the spotter's duties, communications and hand-over procedures before the flight.
- The spotter keeps the FPV aircraft within VLOS and within the field's perimeter, and warns the pilot of approaching aircraft and when to take avoiding action.
- The spotter may take the transmitter at any time during an FPV flight and fly the model by sight.
- If the FPV pilot loses video or orientation, or can't fly safely, they must switch to flying by sight or pass the transmitter to the spotter.
- Before the first flight of an FPV model, and after any changes or repairs to essential flight systems, the model should get a test flight by sight.
9. Field care and emergencies
- We are all responsible for the condition of the field. Never leave trash behind, for any reason.
- The first aid kit is under the BBQ grill.
- The fire extinguisher is under the BBQ grill, with the first aid kit.
- In an emergency, call 911 first. The field's address for 911: the Clarkstown Transfer Station, 166 S Route 303, West Nyack, NY 10994.
- Emergency numbers: Nyack Ambulance Corps 845-358-4824 · Nyack Hospital 845-348-2345 · Clarkstown Police 845-639-5800
- Any pilot not following the field rules will have their membership immediately revoked.
Compliance with the safety rules is the responsibility of each member.
